Recovering Data From A Troubled Hard Drive

Lisa in Coloma, Michigan asked us about a failing hard drive

External Hard Drive

Lisa asked: “I have an external hard drive that doesn’t work. I was wondering how or if I could get the information off of it.”

Lisa, the main question here is how much you value the information on that drive. If it suddenly died there’s a good chance that there’s something wrong with it that you won’t be able to fix for free.

One way or another it probably won’t be cheap.

Depending on how bad things are, you may be able to recover some files using software solutions, or that you will need to send it to a lab to have recovery pros work on it.

One way or another it probably won’t be cheap.

Your first step would be try one of your free software options, they’re usually limited so you’ll buy a paid version, but they may help you.

Take a look at DMDE, and Paragon Rescue, they both offer free versions but do expect to have to pay to recover all your files.
