Michelle in Miami, Florida asked: As someone who is interested in getting into programming – What’s the best way for someone that is entry level, to network myself when I finish my degree, which will be in about two years?

Michelle, start now if you can.

Look for meetup groups that relate to either generic hackdays, or more directly to either languages or segments of the market that you are interested in.

For example, you may find meetups for fintech, edtech, you name it, or you can look for more generic meetings or hackdays in which youll just hack something together as practice and get to know others and hone your skills.

Both Meetup.com and Eventbrite may help find those groups.

You will be much better off approaching that while you still have two years to go because, unfortunately, many of those events clash with regular full time work hours and better align with a student schedule.

Other than that, talk to your professors, they likely know of events or even people that they may be able to connect you with.

Miami doesnt have a very active software industry which is not great in general, but it does mean that it may be easier for you to meet the local players. Look for software bootcamp and coworking meetups, its likely that they have some events that you can attend.

You can also find online events, theyre more awkward but they may help you meet people in other markets and expand your job prospects.
