Tech News and Commentary

Dave and Chris discuss A large charger recall due to fire risk, TikTok’s AI tool creating controversial content, Toyota prioritizing combustion engines, a less dumb paid Alexa, consumers hiring fewer subscription services, and more.

Rita in Miami asked: “I would like to find out what you believe to be the best jump drive to clean up my photos on my iPhone. I have thousands of pictures on my iPhone. I would like them cleaned up, I would like the doubles taken out and I don’t know how to do that. It needs to be user-friendly. I’m not technically savvy.”

Rita, Apple includes the ability to look for duplicate pictures in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS out of the box.

To look for duplicates on your phone, open the Photos app, then go to Albums at the bottom.

Albums will display your recent photos and albums at the top, shared albums below if you have any, people and places below that, types below that, but if you keep on going through all of that and scroll all the way to the bottom you will find Duplicates.

All of the duplicates detected by your phone will be there each with a button to merge so you dont have to track one down to delete it but can get rid of the duplicate on the spot.

If you still want a drive to move some of your pictures to, then the ones that will work for you will depend on your iPhones model.

For older ones youll want something like the SanDisk 256GB iXpand Flash Drive Go which has a Thunderbolt plug, there are also countless generics of that same kind of drive available for purchase online. Youre looking at roughly between $25 and $60 for most drives, but the larger the storage the more youll pay. Youll also pay more for brand names like SanDisk than for generics like iDiskk.

For the iPhone 15, youll be looking at the same kind of drive but with a USB-C plug instead.
