Peter in San Francisco, California”I bought a new computer a couple months ago and I got it with all SSD, even the C Drive. On all of my old computers, I used to do a defrag at least once a month. On this computer, I can’t seem to do a defrag. Are you supposed to defrag solid state drives, or do they just sorta take care of themselves?”
Peter, no you dont need to defrag solid state drivers.
In fact its probably damaging to defrag a solid state drive once a month. Defragmenting a drive results in lots of reads and lots of writes to try to sort the contents of the drive which would eat up both read and write cycles.
Solid state drives have usable write cycle limits and that limit is very high these days and unlikely to be a problem, but artificially increasing writes by trying to shoehorn some defrag process would be counterproductive.
Enjoy the SSDs faster access speeds and dont worry about maintenance; your drive will take care of itself.
David in Anchorage, Alaska”I bought this tablet – a Samsung Tab A – and I got it used off the Internet. For some reason, I cannot get it to download games (I bought it for my child) and now it goes on the Internet – that’s all good – but when it comes to downloading anything, it says it’s not compatible. Any help would be appreciated.”
David, unfortunately theres nothing you can do other than get a different tablet.
The one you bought is likely on the older side and its just not supported anymore.
Unless theres a software update for the tablet, theres no real way around that, the problem is not with the tablet itself but with the world, everything else has moved on past the tablets capabilities and its just either not possible to support it anymore or not worth the expense to do it.
Unfortunately, other than replacing the tablet there are no real solutions.
