This week in 1965 – Early Bird, the first commercial communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit, was launched by NASA from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
In 1975 – Microsoft was formed as a partnership between Bill Gates and Paul Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico
1981 – The Osborne 1, the first successful portable computer, was unveiled at the West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco. This “Portable” computer weighed 23 pounds and cost nearly $1,800 – which would be about $4700 today. Oh, and it only had a 5-inch screen.
1983 – During the Space Shuttle, Challenger’s maiden flight, astronauts Story Musgrave and Don Peterson perform the first Space Shuttle spacewalk.
1994 – Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark formed Netscape Communications under the name Mosaic Communications Corporation.
2000 – In the United States anti-trust case against Microsoft Corp, it was ruled that the software giant had violated United States antitrust law by keeping “an oppressive thumb” on its competitors.
2010 – Apple Inc. released their first generation of the iPad, which went on to become the most popular and widely-used tablet computer.
