Weekend of January 18, 2019 – Hour 1

David in Detroit, Michigan listens on AM800 CKLW “The Information Station” and asked: “I’ve got Windows 10 Desktop 64 bit. My brother has the same thing. I’d like to know how to remote into his computer, preferably free using Windows 10 or free software so I can help him when he has problems.”

David, there are plenty of way to remote in another computer. You can look for free VNC servers like RealVNC or OpenVNC and set him up as the server and yourself as the client, for example.

We’re going to suggest a different route though. Setting up a VNC server would require him to put in some technical work on his end, and you want to remote into his machine which you probably want to do because he’s not as technical as you are.

To get around that, you can have him download TeamViewer, install it as he would any program, and open it. TeamViewer will present him with a random code that you can type into your own installation of TeamViewer on your end and you’ll be able to log in right away.

It will be an easier solution for both sides, especially the not-so-technical half.
