This Week in Tech History: Birth of Yahoo!

On this edition of “This Week in Tech History”, we remember when the site known as “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web” officially became Yahoo!

E. Remington & Sons Typewriter, 1873

This week in 1873 – E. Remington and Sons began manufacturing the first practical typewriter. The strong as steel, heavy black clunkers became instant fixtures in offices across the country. It would be another half-century before electric typewriters made their appearance.

W47NV’s FM Transmitter

1941 – FM Radio began in the U.S. when station W47NV in Nashville, TN started operations on this day. W47NV was the first commercial FM radio station to receive a license, some 20 years after its AM radio counterpart, KDKA in Pittsburgh.

1954 RCA Color TV

in 1954 – The first color television sets using the NTSC standard are offered for sale to the general public.

Yahoo’s Homepage in 1995

And this week in 1995 – Yahoo! was incorporated. The company actually began a year earlier as Jerry and David’s guide to the World Wide Web.
