Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss Facebook bringing our real selves into VR, the Oculus Go, Amazon’s rejection phone calls, Amazon’s 20% price hike, Snap’s second gen spectacles, a headphone jack for a new iPhone, Instagram’s comment filter, and more.

Jamie in Montgomery, Alabama asked: “I do a lot of traveling for work. The biggest problem is staying connected. I saw that while you were recently in Rome, you used Skyroam global Wi-Fi. Please tell me more.”

Jamie, Skyroam is basically a MiFi type of device. It’s a hotspot like you could get from most carriers with one big difference: it’s global.

We’ve used Skyroam from Germany, to Italy, to China, to Amsterdam and more, and it’s worked very well everywhere we’ve taken it.

The new model is called Solis and it can connect up to 5 devices at once and it also doubles as an external battery.

Skyroam doesn’t work as most hotspot plans, instead of paying a monthly fee for a set amount of data, Skyroam sells days of use. If, for example, you’re landing in a new country late at night and you won’t need data, you won’t pay for it. However, if you need it the following day, you can use a day to stay connected for those 24 hours.

If you’re a frequent traveler, you can buy a Skyroam Solis for $149 and pay $9 per daypass anywhere in the world. If you’ll just be taking a trip here and there, you can instead rent a Skyroam and pay for it by paying $9.95 instead of $9 per day.
